Mahtomedi Schools

Mahtomedi School District reached out to Spectrum Signs to create a directional sign package for their campus. With a high school, middle school, fine arts center and multiple athletic fields spread out over the campus, there was a need for wayfinding between the different facilities.

Mahtomedi School’s Goals

Ultimately Mahtomedi Schools wanted a sign package to direct people to the athletic fields they were looking for, label the athletic fields to let them know when they arrived and add some freestanding campus maps to help with navigating to all the different fields. They wanted it to be a cohesive sign package that would be easily readable day or night and allow traffic to flow from one end of the campus to the other.

Site survey key to success of project

We met onsite with their facilities team to determine what the main destination points were on the campus. After destinations were determined, we drove the campus to understand traffic flow and find all the decision making points where visitors had to choose a direction. This helped us determine where signs should be placed as well as what information needed to be on each sign.

We created a color-coded labeling system for the different athletic fields throughout the campus. Because most visitors would be driving through the campus to find certain athletics fields, colors were used to help with identification from a distance.

Bringing the signs to life

The new directional signs are fabricated out of aluminum and painted dark bronze with white reflective vinyl copy, which provides excellent contrast during the day and helps with visibility at night. All freestanding signs were installed in concrete footings to prevent signs from shifting in the ground.

We also created maps with all the field and building locations marked out. These were needed because activities take place in multiple locations during tournaments and special events and they wanted visitors to be able to navigate the grounds.

Spectrum Signs continues to work with Mahtomedi School District and has been a part of many projects throughout the years.
