Cobblestone Court Shopping Center

Cobblestone Court is a retail shopping center in Burnsville, MN. The shopping center was built in 1979 and was due for an upgrade to the exterior of the building. Part of the renovation was recladding the different storefronts with an architectural metal paneling to create a more updated and modern look. The property had one multi-tenant pylon sign and one low profile monument sign at the opposite entrance.

Schafer Richardson, who led the development of the project, reached out to Spectrum Signs looking for some design options for the two signs. The goal was to reuse the existing steel structure of the pylon sign and create a whole new multi-tenant pylon sign to replace the low profile monument. They were looking for an updated design to showcase the tenants as well as the shopping center.

A goal in mind

The Schafer Richardson team envisioned the new pylon signs having a substantial look to them. They wanted the shopping center name to take the top spot on both signs and right below a larger tenant panel for anchor tenants in the building. The signs also needed to incorporate six additional tenant spots for the rest of the tenants in the building.

Unique design

Design began with those requirements in mind and we started on initial concepts for their team to review. The design team at Spectrum worked off architectural drawings provided by Schafer Richardson and was able to mimic the new architectural metal paneling to be used on the vertical uprights of the pylon signs. They were designed with 1/2" reveals between each panel to tie into the building. The color scheme was intentionally kept pretty minimal to allow the full color tenant graphics to stand-out on the sign. Samples of the metal panels were ordered to ensure there would be a color match when the time came for fabrication to begin.

Working with the city

Because the plan was to remove a low profile monument sign and replace with a multi-tenant pylon sign, communication with the city was very important. After designs had been finalized and approved by the client, we filled out all the correct permit applications to make the process as smooth as possible for all parties involved.

Installation of pylon signs

The addition of the new pylon sign was approved by the city and we began fabrication of the signs. While the signs were being fabricated our installation team removed the existing pylon sign cabinet and brick surround the steel structure we would be reusing. They also demoed the monument sign and set new concrete footings and steelwork for the new pylon sign. Once fabrication was complete installation of the pylon signs took place.

The end result

Spectrum Sign Systems designed and installed two highly visible multi-tenant pylon signs that compliment the buildings’ architecture. The customer was happy with the new look and the tenants were thrilled to have representation on the new signs.

Project Highlights
  • 1 pylon sign designed to compliment new building renovation and built to reuse existing pylon sign structure.
