The Capri Theater

Dating back to 1927, the Capri Theater went through a $12.5 million renovation and new addition that is breathing new life into the 94-year-old building.

Looking to maintain the historical character of the building, the Plymouth Christian Youth Center (PCYC), wanted to create a historic looking marquee sign that used the latest technology and had environmentally friendly lighting.

Marquee signs have been around since the 1930’s and are an essential part of promoting  shows and attracting foot and vehicle traffic for theaters. PCYC was looking for a truly unique marquee sign.

Having worked on many historical projects, Spectrum Signs knows the importance of honoring the past while incorporating the latest technology.

Design Challenge

The design team went to work creating a marquee and projecting blade sign for the historic theater, blending a classic retro look to compliment the old building, with a fresh and modern look to play off the new addition.

The marquee was designed as a 3-piece trapezoid. The center section would feature a logo display and the two side pieces would consist of LED digital displays. A projecting blade sign would sit on top of the marquee sign. The unique design would showcase modern technology with a nod to the past.

One of the biggest challenges was the structural engineering and attachment method of the signs to ensure the almost 100-year-old wall would be able to support the combined weight of the marquee, message centers, and blade sign. It was also important to minimize the penetrations into the wall to maintain as much of the original brick as possible.

We consulted with engineers to ensure that the attachments chosen would lead to the least amount of holes drilled into the historical wall and that the wall could bear the weight of the signs. The engineers approved the drawings.

The 14.5 foot blade sign, featuring the Capri name, was designed in a simplistic retro style. To simulate the vintage look, it has a rounded front profile and contains LED face illuminated channel letters that are accented by LED rope lighting.

The center section features a face illuminated logo display with LED rope lighting around the perimeter.

The two end sections contain 16-millimeter full color LED digital displays, which can be controlled remotely through cellular communication. This allows them to change messages as easily and as frequently as they want.

To finish the signs off, 132 LED bulbs line the bottom perimeter of the marquee adding to the vintage neon look, and LED can lights illuminate the sidewalk below.

Collaboration was key

The entire project took over a year to complete and required collaboration between the on-site contractors, architects, project engineers, fabricators, city planners, and the Spectrum team. With precise planning, design, and fabrication, the installation went smoothly.

End result

We were honored to be a part of this fantastic project that preserved the historical charm of the theater. We look forward to the Capri Theater’s continued rich tradition.
